Follow your interests, as you are more likely to pour your heart into something you enjoy. But be ready to work very, very hard in service of your dreams.
I believe this part is crucial: HAVE A PLAN. Even if that plan changes and morphs down the road (which it inevitably will), research the specific steps you need to take to get where you want to be, and start taking those steps. Be determined, but not rigid: always keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities, as they may pop up in unexpected places. Remember, luck is a combination of preparation and timing. So be prepared.
One last thing: Know that having a family doesn’t have to derail your career dreams. Just don’t forget to factor it in (if it’s something you’ll want) and have a plan for that too.
