Advice:
First of all, I always advise those interested in going into journalism to read everything you can get your hands on. First and foremost, you have to build a foundation of knowledge when it comes to current events. Newspapers, magazines and the internet are invaluable in the world of journalism. I also advise that you develop a love for writing. Take your English classes very seriously. The writing portion of this business is the thoroughfare to your viewer. You need to write profoundly in order to get the message of “news” across. In addition, get experience any way you can. For example, if there is a radio station or newspaper at your school, work as a reporter, editor or even anchor. The more experience you obtain in the business the better. In college, make a point to work on the college newspaper as well. It will give you a “real” understanding of what “deadlines” are in this business. Lastly, be prepared to get your feet wet in a small market. I started in the tiny town of Prescott, Az. Many graduates believe they can work in an Atlanta right out of college. Can it happen? Yes. Is it likely? No. Be willing to make very little money, yet gain everything in terms of experience. In the smaller markets, I learned to write, shoot, report, produce, do weather, edit—everything!
