Advice:

Be flexible, be open to opportunity, and don’t feel you need to have everything figured out from the get-go. I didn’t know when I began my path as a mechanical engineer that I would wind up a university president. The path I took to get to my current position wasn’t an obvious one. I honored different stages in my life that called for me to do different things professionally & personally. I took life step by step, all the while being open to opportunity, enhancing my awareness of my skills and what I enjoyed, and staying true to my values. All of that led to moving into higher education administration and ultimately reaching where I am today. I am extremely happy in my work because I do what’s meaningful to me, what makes a difference in the world, and what I am well-matched for. Young women should think hard about what’s meaningful to them and how they might begin to contribute in ways that are aligned with that meaning — if you start by doing that, where you wind up will, in many ways, take care of itself.
