Advice:
As an educator, I would, of course, encourage you to develop critical thinking and communication skills, understand at least everyday science, technology, and mathematics, appreciate the arts and reading, and cultivate world-views that are inclusive of all people. These skills are very important in helping you get ahead. Just as important, I believe, is choosing to embrace a positive attitude. So, here are some hints from my personal experience on how to live a happy and meaningful life.
- Be grateful everyday for what you have instead of focusing only on what you want. Notice how your life is enriched by others’ support and love.
- Celebrate your own success and the success of others. Happiness is not a zero sum game. It grows to any size. Be joyful at others’ accomplishments (and tell them) and your own triumphs will follow.
- Savor each moment you have. Live in the present without anxiety about the future or regret about the past. Be alert to your life.
- Be skeptical about what “everyone believes” or the latest fads- always find your own evidence. Do the work and you’ll never succumb to blind ideologies.
And, finally, be bold and be persistent! Stay committed to building your own unique life filled with meaning.
