I recently posted on Facebook: “I was reminded again today of the value of fostering relationships. One way we foster relationships is by talking openly, authentically, and respectfully with each other.” Maintaining relationships takes effort, but I still check in with my group of close high school friends each time I go back to Belgium to visit.
Many in the military refer to the challenges of living in a VUCA world, which is an acronym for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. I have come up with my own acronym for how to move forward in a VUCA world. I say FORWARD: be Flexible, keep an Open mind, take Risks, stay Watchful, seek Authenticity, nurture Relationships, and maintain Determination. These words each have a great depth of meaning, which I won’t go into as I am sure you can glean from each word the essence of the idea. I have found this mnemonic device useful as I embrace the opportunities and face the challenges of a VUCA world.
